I was not aware of any of this until I tried to ditch my old Hotmail-based Passport and create a new one with an email I actually use. I also wanted to use the new one to log into Xbox Live. Turns out I'm SOL and Microsoft seems happy about it.
You can change the e-mail address that you use to sign in to the Passport Network only if the e-mail address is not a part of a reserved domain. A reserved domain is managed by a group or a company that controls the registration of all e-mail addresses in that domain. Examples of reserved domains are hotmail.com, msn.com, and webtv.net.
The Windows Live ID credentials that you used when you added Xbox Live to your gamer profile are permanently associated with your Xbox Live enabled profile. You cannot change the Windows Live ID account that is associated with your Xbox Live gamer profile. |

Awesome. I have my new Live ID ready. :D
(Edit: Odd that it's almost a year to the day since I posted the first time.) |
